Daughter: Mum, what age is Carol?
Mum: She’s nearly 18, dear
(…longish pause…)
Daughter: Emmm, Mum?
Mum: Yes, dear.
Daughter: Will you be alive when I’m 18??
I’d just passed, so I glanced back at the woman, who was probably in her late 20s.
We looked at each other – equally speechless – gobsmacked, in fact.
