‘How can I use NLP… in the interview?’

We were chatting in general. And the subject of NLP came up, as it so often does when people discover I’m involved with NLP.

Jack was curious as to whether NLP had any value for him so, to make it relevant to him, I asked him for something that was challenging or concerning him right now. And the big thing was an important job appraisal and interview that was due soon.

‘What’s the best technique for my interview?’

His previous encounters with NLP had been through the internet and a few YouTube videos so he was keen to know which NLP technique would make his forthcoming interview successful.

I explained that that wasn’t how real NLP worked i.e. having a trick for this or a technique for that. I explained it was about changing our thoughts and reactions so that we could handle situations more effectively and that this required exploring the situation a bit more thoroughly.

So we quickly drilled down a bit and identified 4 issues regarding the interview:

  1. Competence – how to thoroughly prepare for it
  2. Confidence – how to handle his nervousness
  3. Communication skills
  4. Undermining thoughts he had about the interview and about the job.

Just doing this made a bit difference for him. His knotted stomach and the mush of scary thoughts were replaced by clearer and less emotional thinking.

He knew he had things to do. But he now knew ‘what’ to do.
